You Can Conquer Pest Control With This

Termite Inspection
When you have pests in your home, it can be very annoying. Many people do not know what to do except to throw their hands in the air and call a pest control center. Well, that's an option, but there are plenty of different strategies you can prepare on your own.

Do you have a fruit fly problem? The weak link might be your drains. Tape some plastic wrap over a drain for a few days and see if fruit flies start popping up. If they do, pour some boiling water down your drain and give it a good scrub. This will help you keep the flies from breeding.

If you are seeing a large number of bugs indoors, slowly circle the perimeter of your house. Try to find any small openings where bugs could get in. Look closely near your chimney and the siding. If you locate a hole, buy silicone caulk and get the area fixed to the best of your ability.

If you are having a pest control problem at your home, take a look at your garbage for clues to why this is happening. Garbage needs to be in air tight bags and disposed of on a regular basis. Keep your trash outside your home and not inside your kitchen to reduce the chances of having a pest problem.

You may believe that your home has no signs of pest problems? However, you should still regularly check your entire home. If you have a basement, for example, you might have a subterranean termite infestation and not even know it. Check crawl spaces and basements.

Check to see that all of your food is airtight and sealed efficiently. If food is not sealed properly, it will give off an odor, which will attract a wide range of insects. This could lead to an infestation, which can cost you a lot of time and money in the long run.

If you have an ant problem, boric acid is your solution. Sprinkle some of this outside. Especially around your home where they are getting in. When ants bring some back to the ant hill, the other ants will eat and and they will die. This will also help keep them from entering your home.

Clean any highly trafficked food areas every single day. Even a few crumbs each day can lead to a feast for pests over time. It's best then to approach your cleaning not once a week, but daily for these areas. Even just five minutes will lead you to a cleaner area and less potential pests.

If you have problems with moles in your yard, set up a trap. You will know a mole is present by the raised portion of your yard that's been tunneled under. Use a shovel to collapse a section of the tunnel (approx. 4"). Set up a mole trap over the collapsed portion and wait for the mole to tunnel through and try to fix the collapse.

Make sure that your kitchen does not have grease problems. Grease is a regular dietary staple of ants, roaches and a number of small flies. Drain flies actually breed in grease pans. So, eliminate all visible grease areas. However, also deal with invisible grease underneath stoves and your countertops.

Whether you use a pest control service is is up to you, but you should now have a much better idea about how you should deal with pests in your home as well. You don't want bugs smiling back up at you, so you better get started with a plan. Try out some of these tips today.

Timber structure of jetties set for removal

WORKS to remove the termite-infested wooden structure of the two jetties at Point Reserve started on Wednesday.

Four contractors in wet suits have established a containment barrier around the north jetty and started removing planks.

Once this work is completed, they will start work to remove the damaged timber on the south jetty.

The total cost of the works is $28,000.

Chief executive Peta Mabbs said safety was a priority.

“When you are dealing with potentially millions of these insects on an important piece of our history, on the banks of a river with its rich and sometimes fragile biodiversity, in a place about which many of us hold fond memories of growing up – it’s a big challenge,” she said.

“As the CEO, it would have been irresponsible and negligent not to address the safety hazard.

“They are a critical risk and my hand was forced by those safety considerations…there was no other option.

“If a child had fallen through a damaged jetty plank and hurt themselves, or worse still, drowned, I would be responsible for any loss of life and the Town would be liable for damages.”

THE termite-infested decking of the two jetties at Point Reserve will be removed this week after the Town of Bassendean received approvals from State Government departments.

The Town announced on November 11 that it would remove the unsafe timber structure of the 70-year-old jetties after it was found the timber structures were infested with termites.

The announcement resulted in community backlash and a petition for repairs gaining more than 550 signatures in a week.
